What Getting Assessed Could Mean for You

A diagnosis is not the end of the story. For most people, it is the point at which things start to make sense.

Clarity on lifelong patterns
Many people describe diagnosis as the moment a lifetime of feeling different, or of unexplained struggles, finally made sense. Read about how autism presents in adults.
Access to accommodations
A formal diagnosis opens doors to workplace adjustments, educational supports (RACE, DARE, SEN), and services that require diagnostic evidence.
Care that continues after diagnosis
Unlike assessment-only services, we offer a complete pathway from diagnosis through to psychiatry, therapy, coaching, and ongoing support.

Is This Assessment Right for You?

This assessment is suitable if you are...
  • An adult who suspects they may be autistic, particularly if you were missed in childhood
  • A woman or non-binary person exploring late diagnosis (autism is often missed or misdiagnosed)
  • A parent seeking assessment for a child or adolescent
  • Someone waiting on HSE lists who wants to access assessment privately
  • A student needing a report for RACE or DARE college access applications
  • Anyone who wants an in-person or online assessment with a formal HSE-recognised report
You may want to consider something else if...
  • You are looking for assessment for a very young child (under 5) - contact us to discuss
  • You are primarily seeking support for ADHD - our ADHD Assessment service may be more appropriate
  • You suspect both ADHD and autism - ask about our combined AuDHD assessment
  • You already have an autism diagnosis and are seeking therapy or support only - our Therapy or Psychiatry services may fit better

What Actually Happens During an Autism Assessment

What is an Autism Assessment?

An autism assessment is a clinical evaluation to determine whether autism explains the differences or difficulties you or your child are experiencing. It is not a personality test or a quick questionnaire. A qualified clinician gathers a detailed developmental history, observes how you communicate and interact using structured tools, and considers whether other explanations should be ruled out.

NCSE data suggests around 3.4% of children in Ireland were recorded as autistic in 2022, up from 1.55% in 2018 (Irish Examiner, NCSE). Adult prevalence is harder to measure because autism was historically under-recognised, particularly in women. Late diagnosis in adulthood is now well-documented in the research literature.

At The Private Therapy Clinic, assessments are carried out by psychologists registered with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) and psychiatrists registered with the Irish Medical Council (IMC), using ADOS-2 and other validated tools.

How the Assessment Works for Adults

Before your appointment, you complete questionnaires about your history, communication style, sensory experience, and current difficulties. The assessment itself is a detailed clinical interview lasting 90 to 180 minutes, conducted by a PSI-registered psychologist or IMC-registered psychiatrist. The clinician uses validated tools including the ADOS-2, a structured observation designed to elicit behaviours characteristic of autism.

Following the assessment, you receive a written diagnostic report. If autism is diagnosed, the report includes a full clinical account and recommendations for support. If autism is not diagnosed, the clinician will discuss what else may be contributing to your difficulties and recommend appropriate next steps.

How the Assessment Works for Children and Adolescents

Child and adolescent assessments involve parents or carers throughout. Questionnaires are completed about behaviour, developmental history, and current difficulties at home and school. Information is often gathered from teachers as well.

During the assessment, the clinician meets with your child and uses the ADOS-2 alongside clinical observation. Multi-informant, multi-setting information is central to a robust autism diagnosis. Reports meet requirements for SEN provision, SENO applications, RACE exam accommodations, and DARE college access applications.

Support After Diagnosis

A diagnosis is the beginning, not the end. Unlike some assessment-only services, The Private Therapy Clinic offers a complete pathway from diagnosis through to therapy, coaching, sensory-informed support, and ongoing psychiatric care where needed. Your care does not need to be fragmented across different providers.

Autism is not a mental illness and does not require treatment. What most people benefit from is understanding, environmental adjustments, and, where relevant, therapy adapted for autistic clients. Our therapists work in autism-affirming ways.

What a Diagnosis Can Help With

A diagnosis opens practical doors. Here is what most people use theirs for.

1

Self-Understanding

Finally having language for experiences that never quite made sense. Many people describe diagnosis as the missing piece that explains a lifetime of feeling different.

2

Workplace Support

Access to reasonable adjustments through your employer: flexible working, quiet spaces, clearer communication structures, adjusted deadlines, or sensory-friendly workspaces.

3

Educational Accommodations

For students: access to RACE (Reasonable Accommodations at the Certificate Examinations), DARE (Disability Access Route to Education), and university disability support services.

4

School Support (Children)

A diagnosis can support applications for SEN provision, resource hours, and SENO involvement. Our reports are written with these applications in mind.

5

Access to Services

Some HSE and community services require a formal diagnosis to access support. A private diagnosis is accepted when conducted by qualified professionals using validated tools.

6

Community and Identity

Many autistic people find value in connecting with the autistic community. A diagnosis can open doors to peer support, autistic-led resources, and a sense of belonging.

Autism itself is not a mental illness and does not require treatment. What most people benefit from is understanding, environmental adjustments, and, where relevant, therapy adapted for autistic clients. That said, conditions like anxiety, depression, and trauma commonly occur alongside autism, and these do respond very well to treatment. If you or your child are struggling with any of these, our therapists and psychiatrists work in autism-affirming ways and can help. For more on autism itself as a condition, read our full guide.

Common Questions

A full autism assessment at Private Therapy Clinic Ireland is €1,200 all-inclusive, for both adults and children. This covers pre-assessment questionnaires, the clinical interview, ADOS-2 observation, MDT review including a PSI-registered Psychologist, and a full detailed diagnostic report. If you suspect both ADHD and autism, our combined AuDHD assessment is €2,000, or from €1,805 for a child/adolescent MDT pathway with a Neurodiversity Practitioner and Chartered Psychologist. Klarna pay-in-3 is available at checkout.

Autism is diagnosed by qualified clinical or counselling psychologists registered with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI), or by psychiatrists registered with the Irish Medical Council (IMC). Our clinicians are ADOS-2 certified, which is the internationally recognised gold-standard observation tool for autism diagnosis.

Yes, significantly. Over 20,000 children are currently overdue for HSE Assessment of Need past the statutory 6-month limit. For adults, Ireland's first standardised public autism assessment pathway only launched in May 2026 and rollout began in July, with children the stated priority. Our private assessments are typically available within 1 to 2 weeks.

Yes. Our assessments are conducted by PSI-registered psychologists and IMC-registered psychiatrists using validated diagnostic tools including ADOS-2. The diagnostic reports we provide are accepted by GPs, the HSE, schools, employers, and the Department of Education.

Yes. We assess adults, adolescents, and children from age 6. For children under 6, please contact us to discuss whether an assessment is currently appropriate.

The assessment appointment itself takes between 90 minutes and 4 hours depending on the pathway. For a full MDT assessment with ADOS-2, allow up to 4 hours (sometimes across two sessions for children). Written reports are typically delivered within 2 weeks.

Adult assessments are available online. For children, we recommend in-person assessment in Dublin or Nenagh because behavioural observation is central to autism diagnosis, and online is not always suitable for younger children. Your clinician will advise if online is appropriate.

If the assessment concludes you do not meet the diagnostic criteria for autism, your report will still provide a detailed summary of your profile, including strengths and areas where support might help. Our clinicians will discuss the findings and can recommend next steps, which may include assessment for other conditions such as ADHD.
